AI-Enhanced Museum Experience

Transforming visitor engagement through intelligent exhibits

Grand Valley State University Museum
December 2025

Overview

Designed and implemented an AI-powered interactive museum experience that increased visitor engagement by 45% and extended average visit duration from 20 to 35 minutes.

The challenge was clear: how do you make museum exhibits more engaging for digital-native visitors without compromising the integrity of the artifacts or the educational mission?

We partnered with GVSU Museum to develop an AI-enhanced exhibit system that combined computer vision, natural language processing, and conversational AI to create personalized, interactive experiences.

The system recognized visitor interest patterns through gaze tracking and movement analysis, then offered contextual information and stories through a conversational interface. Visitors could ask questions about artifacts in natural language and receive detailed, historically accurate responses.

The results exceeded expectations: visitor engagement increased by 45%, average visit duration grew from 20 to 35 minutes, and post-visit surveys showed significantly higher retention of educational content. Perhaps most importantly, the museum reported that visitors were having deeper, more meaningful conversations about the exhibits.

This project demonstrated how AI can enhance rather than replace human curation, creating spaces where technology serves to deepen our connection to history and culture.
